ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Vaccines Medical Affairs Lead for LATAM, you will provide near and long-term strategic direction as well as development and oversight of the scientific platform in support of the vaccine product strategies for the region
- Key focus is to shape the scientific understanding and narrative for vaccines across the LATAM region, and in particular for TAK-003 dengue vaccine.
- In partnership with the Growth &Emerging Markets (GEM) Vaccines Medical Affairs Head, provides vaccines medical leadership to LATAM Countries enhancing cross functional organizational excellence with Evidence Generation and Publications, Public Affairs, Market Access and other relevant cross-functional teams.
- Lead LATAM regional medical initiatives to support licensure and introduction of vaccine products, including efforts to support recommendations in supranational and national vaccination schedules by supranational bodies.
- Serve as key medical liaison with LATAM regional non-governmental and governmental organizations such as PAHO, GAVI, UNICEF etc., on scientific and policy issues for vaccines in general and in particular TAK-003 dengue vaccine.
- Key Medical LATAM referent for GEM medical strategies, prioritization, and scientific development opportunities.
- Establish, develop, and drive strong relationships with key external medical and public health stakeholders, Professional Associations, key external institutions at LATAM level through scientific discussions and projects to build Takeda regional leadership in vaccine preventable diseases.
- Interact internally with LATAM, GEM and Vaccines Business Unit (VBU) Leaders. Advise and negotiate, as required, to guide the overall vaccine medical activities.
- Under the guidance of GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs Head, contribute to building, training, and supporting LOC Medical Affairs staff to introduce vaccines into respective national programs in LATAM.
- In conjunction with GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs, ensure that LATAM and LOC medical needs are considered when elaborating GEM and global Medical Affairs strategies (including the need for LATAM regional epidemiological data, clinical evidence, and population perspectives).
- Provide medical direction and review for pre- and post-launch medical and public health policies strategies in LATAM.
- Ensure that medical activities in the LATAM Region and LOCs are compliant with all applicable local and regional regulations and obligations, as well as in line with Takeda’s own Ethical Guidelines and Business Practices. Supervises that all relevant LATAM staff are properly trained and lead by example in these and other Takeda’s policies. Always uphold the company reputation.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES
- Ensure excellence and timeliness in LATAM Brand Strategy and Medical Plan development and execution.
- In conjunction with GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs guide, and review LATAM local brand and medical plans, and medical launch/post-paunch milestones.
- Formulate and drive strategic LATAM focused KOL/Medical Societies/Stakeholder engagement plans and tactics aiming at keeping vaccinations and dengue prevention at the center of the public health agenda in LATAM.
- In collaboration with GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs, identify and support key LATAM evidence generation, RWE studies; oversees local evidence generation strategy, and publications to advance knowledge and inform global, regional and local vaccine recommendations.
- In conjunction with GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs, review and approve LATAM and LOC research proposals (Investigator Initiated Studies-IIR, Collaborative Research-CR, etc.) to ensure regional alignment and execution of this research within Takeda standards of compliance.
- Ensure the scientific integrity, GCP adherence, (global) strategic alignment and safety design of clinical studies undertaken by the LATAM or LOC medical affairs teams. Approver for integrity and correctness of the analysis, interpretation, scientific validity of the publications produced.
- Build and maintain a strong LATAM supranational scientific stakeholders’ network.
- Review and approve key medical/scientific and promotional materials at LATAM regional level as per Takeda policies.
- Provide scientific training of LATAM senior internal stakeholders.
- Build and drive major LATAM strategic medical communications and education plans.
- Under the GEM Vaccines Medical Affairs Head guidance, partner and guide LATAM local medical teams to build vaccine medical capabilities and to ensure strategic relevance, timeline, and delivery of medical activities.
- Expert speaker in relevant scientific congresses/events, roundtables, and workshops at LATAM and international level.
- Ensure that all scientific-medical communications are fair-balanced, based on appropriate scientific evidence, and compliant with local regulatory norms and internal compliance policies.
- Budgets owner for LATAM medical activities.
Qualification and Experience
- MD (preferred). PhD qualifications may be considered in the case of applicants who are established leaders in Vaccines.
- Minimum of 10 years of medical affairs and/or clinical development experience in the pharmaceutical industry at regional and global level.
- Strong vaccines expertise is key requirement. Proven track records of vaccines launch across different infectious diseases areas, across the life-course, and in different geographies in both private and public programs.
- In depth knowledge of the PAHO countries healthcare system and vaccine implementation framework is considered an asset
- Knowledge of GAVI framework for vaccine implementation in low-income countries, UNICEF Vaccine strategy and projects, in particular in LATAM countries, is preferred
- In depth knowledge of industry, vaccines business and products, countries in scope and key stakeholders’ particularities.
- Recognized internally and externally as a vaccine expert. Superior scientific, clinical, credibility, with strong track records of publications and speaking activities in the field.
- In depth knowledge of the international public health healthcare environment, able to identify and contribute to healthcare trends and in maximizing related medical opportunities.
- Fluent in Spanish and English required, knowledge of other languages such as Portuguese is a plus.

Requirements:
- This position requires travelling 30% to 40% of the time.
