7 Women in STEM Driving Impact at Takeda
Each of us here brings the passion and courage to make history every day and transform health care forever, but our paths to this mission are unique. That’s why we asked these inspiring women in science to share their journeys—what brought them to our organization, and what keeps them engaged in their work. Read on to discover their stories.
Yasuko Terao, Head, External Scientific Engagement
Yasuko’s interest in science sparked in junior high school after reading about the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, inspiring her to contribute to the growing body of biological knowledge. In addition to driving this evolving passion in her work, Yasuko embraces our career growth philosophy to master the skills needed to excel in a leadership role. “Takeda works to create tailored programs that foster growth and provide us active ownership of our careers," says Yasuko.
For Yasuko, scientific and business goals can only be achieved by working as a unified team with internal and external stakeholders. “Takeda promotes an environment where everyone can contribute to their fullest potential, fostering collaboration," says Yasuko. This sense of purpose and teamwork fuels Yasuko’s daily motivation. "Knowing that my team’s efforts contribute to improving health keeps me committed to excellence, while the constant evolution in science and technology keeps my passion alive.”
Jessica Tilak, Head, Global Integrated Clinical Trial Data Services
After graduating college, Jessica entered the job market without a clearly defined career path and landed a role at a clinical research organization. “As I learned about the facets of the clinical trial landscape, I recognized the difference a career in the pharmaceutical industry could make in the lives of patients,” says Jessica. In less than a year here, Jessica has received support in her developmental journey. “I already feel immersed in Takeda’s culture of continuous learning and am empowered to make the decisions needed to move our business forward,” says Jessica.
From Jessica’s viewpoint, the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking treatments is a privilege that strengthens her commitment to the field each day. “Connecting the data to the people who have the potential to benefit from the work we do isn’t only about science, it’s about hope, healing and making a tangible difference.”
Isabel Valencia, Market Access Manager, Oncology
Inspired by her mother’s passion as a pharmacist, Isabel aimed for a career in health sciences before learning about the field of business in college. “I saw the pharmaceutical industry as the convergence of two interests: caring for others and the business world,” says Isabel. To date, Isabel has taken on new challenges by transitioning through four distinct roles.
Over her six years here, Isabel has appreciated the sense of belonging created by our employee resource groups. “Even in forums where I was among the younger participants, I felt listened to and appreciated,” says Isabel. Through her team’s efforts, Isabel believes she can help support patients by improving access to essential treatments. “I find it remarkable to work in a sector with a meaningful purpose and impact in making a difference in someone's health journey.”
Chi Onyebuchi, Plasma-Derived Therapies R&D Global Program Lead
Chi’s passion for discovering how biological systems work began early, and with her parents' support, she pursued a career in STEM. "I’m privileged to work at the forefront of scientific exploration at Takeda, aligning my interests with the company’s commitment to better health and a brighter future," says Chi.
Chi views mentorship as a cornerstone of our support structure, helping guide her career in a meaningful direction. “I’m fortunate to receive guidance from peers, managers and senior leaders which helps me navigate challenges and seize growth opportunities,” says Chi. In her day-to-day work developing medicines, Chi finds purpose. “It’s rewarding to know that each step we take brings us closer to delivering life-transforming treatments to those in need, making a difference in their quality of life.”
Melitta Bilban-Jaksche, VP, Global Program Lead
As an analytical thinker, Melitta was drawn to science, beginning her career in medicinal chemistry. “It wasn’t until I entered the pharmaceutical world that I found my passion for developing innovative therapy solutions for patients,” says Melitta.
In her role, Melitta constantly grows as drug development brings new challenges every day, and she uses our career growth tools to expand her skills. “I can select from multiple programs that meet my development needs,” says Melitta. Motivated by the impact her work can have on patients with chronic conditions, Melitta finds inspiration in leading teams, supporting colleagues and collaborating across functions. “Science enabled me to find true purpose in my work.”
Alison Betts, Global Head, Drug Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics & Modeling (DMPK&M)
While taking a pre-med course in college, Alison’s professor mentioned she might witness a cure for cancer in her lifetime. “My mother had been diagnosed with cancer, and I felt it was a call to action to contribute to the development of treatments,” says Alison.
Alison views the diverse discussions that our speak-up culture fosters as essential for a productive research environment, where the best ideas and solutions come from collaborative teamwork, regardless of background, gender or level. “My team is divided between the U.S. and Japan, and we’ve formed a group of female scientists who support each other,” says Alison. A deep connection to the mission and constant innovation in the field keep Alison passionate about her work. “The knowledge that our efforts may lead to new treatments that improve lives is fulfilling.”
Verena Beckmann, Manager Vaccines Manufacturing Science & Technology Drug Substances
In high school, Verena developed a passion for understanding how substances interact. “After completing my PhD in chemistry, I decided to work in a pharmaceutical environment because I saw the potential to solve real-world problems and make an impact in the industry,” says Verena.
From Verena’s point of view, our commitment to creating an inclusive workplace culture sets us apart. “Takeda is distinguished in terms of inclusion by its commitment to diversity,” says Verena. The ability to contribute to the advancement of vaccine technology in our work environment brings Verena a deep sense of fulfillment. “The opportunity to make a significant impact on patients' lives by advancing public health initiatives inspires me every day.”
