Job Description
Analytical Development (AD Biologics), part of Pharmaceutical Sciences, plays a vital role in drug development by delivering analytical methodologies that evaluate the quality attributes of recombinant drug candidates throughout clinical development and into commercialization. The Structural Characterization team applies state-of-the-art technologies, with a strong emphasis on advanced mass spectrometry, to characterize molecular integrity, heterogeneity, and stability. These capabilities provide critical insight into chemical vulnerabilities and structural modifications at the molecular level, supporting both risk assessment and control strategies across the entire lifecycle of biotherapeutics.
This internship project will develop an internal, web-based post-translational modification (PTM) delta-mass reference database that consolidates aliases, establishes preferred nomenclature, and links to authoritative references. The resource will serve as a centralized platform to improve the consistency and accuracy of peptide mapping and intact mass data interpretation in liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows. The intern will compile content from UniMod, scientific literature, and internal records, design the database architecture, and deploy a user-friendly interface within the organization’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment using an appropriate web framework. The role includes coordination with scientific experts and information technology partners to validate content and ensure usability, with final deliverables including a deployed prototype, documentation, user guidelines, and a presentation to stakeholders.
How You Will Contribute:
As the AD Mass Spectrometry Informatics Intern, you will have the opportunity to:
Compile post-translational modification (PTM) information from UniMod, scientific literature, and internal records into a structured reference set.
Consolidate aliases and define preferred nomenclature to standardize PTM naming across analytical development.
Design and implement a user-friendly, web-based database interface within the organization’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment.
Integrate links to authoritative references for each PTM to provide scientific context and support data interpretation.
Collaborate with scientific subject matter experts and information technology partners to validate content and ensure usability.
Deliver a working prototype of the database along with documentation, user guidelines, and a final presentation to stakeholders.
Internship Development Opportunities:
As an intern, you will have the opportunity to:
Gain hands-on experience developing and deploying a web-based database application within a leading biopharmaceutical environment.
Build skills in cloud computing, web technologies, and user experience design for scientific tools, while also learning mass spectrometry data processing and informatics.
Collaborate across scientific and IT functions, strengthening problem-solving, creative thinking, and professional communication skills.
Explore optional wet lab experience, including exposure to analytical techniques and sample preparation workflows that complement the informatics aspects of the project.
Job Requirements:
Full-time position requiring 4+ days per week on-site at the Lexington campus.
Must be a third-year B.S. student or above (including Master’s or Ph.D. candidates) in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Demonstrated interest in web-based scientific application development and user experience design.
Familiarity with developing database architecture, building searchable and intuitive web interfaces, and deploying solutions in cloud environments such as Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Experience with one or more frameworks such as PHP, ASP.NET, Python Django, or R Shiny is desirable.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently.
Effective communication skills and proven ability to collaborate across scientific and IT functions to deliver an accessible and sustainable platform.
