Job Description

The Head of Medical Affairs, Oncology Business Unit (OBU) will provide and drive near and long-term strategic direction, as well as development and oversight, of the medical activities in support of the product strategies for the US Oncology portfolio. This role involves providing leadership through multiple levels and influencing the overall business strategy to ensure alignment with Takeda's mission.  This leader will serve as a critical and highly visible member of the U.S. Oncology Leadership Team (US OLT), responsible for driving strategic alignment and execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Medical leadership, medical strategic planning and resourcing, as well as scientific, medical and clinical oversight in support of medical, payer and patient access strategies for all Oncology products and pipeline

  • Lead medical team responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of medical affairs research strategies (including post-approval investigator-initiated research, phase 3b/4 and outcomes research) and medical & scientific communication platform(s) for Oncology, in collaboration with the global medical oncology organization.

  • Provide medical input into the long-term vision and growth strategies for all products in Oncology

  • Lead and direct the medical responsibilities by providing scientific insight and development of strategy for the given products and pipeline within assigned portfolio by leading, or actively participating in cross functional teams to realize Takeda’s overall vision.

  • Serve as US medical scientific expert for the full portfolio of Oncology products and represent US Medical on governance committees as appropriate

  • Responsible for ensuring launch readiness and leading cross-functional teams through successful execution of product launches

  • Work within the US Medical matrix organization and is ultimately accountable for all medical affairs strategic and execution deliverables for all products.

  • Form integrated partnerships with the corresponding global and US business Unit and the Managed Market Organizations

  • Form integrated partnerships with R&D therapeutic area(s), providing US Healthcare system medical insights into ongoing and planned development programs

  • Interact internally with senior level management requiring negotiation to guide the overall activities of the entire therapeutic area.  

  • Develop and maintain relationships externally through Advisory Boards, Professional Associations and Meetings, Trade Exhibits etc. to achieve Takeda’s scientific objectives

  • Manage the Medical Affairs budget for US Medical Office therapeutic area

  • When requested, provide input to confidential New Business Development opportunities within the therapeutic area of expertise of the director.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Essential:

  • MD credential strongly preferred with at least 12 plus years of experience in pharmaceutical industry and/or academic research, relevant clinical experience, or equivalent combination 

  • Experience with clinical research, publication activities, congress presentations, and public speaking

  • Senior leadership experience in pharmaceuticals or related field, and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders is required

  • Must have proven track record of leading and driving business process transformation and organizational culture change as well as delivering on programs with complex business deliverables

  • Operational experience in pharmaceutical drug development with significant direct exposure to clinical development

  • Must have track record of successful leadership, management, and development of large, multi-disciplinary home office and field based dispersed teams. Strong judge of talent with the ability to make tough talent decisions.

  • Health care business acumen with a comprehensive understanding of the pharmaceutical industry is required

  • Must have strong ability to analyze a wide variety of scientific data including financial figures and market research data to make management decisions

Desired:

  • Life cycle management experience preferred

  • Board certification desired in therapeutic area related to position (Oncology or Hematology)

  •  Skilled in Scientific Research: Develops and approves scientific methods for clinical trials, contributing to robust data collection.

  • Proficient in Clinical Data Interpretation: Analyzes and interprets complex clinical data to inform strategic decisions.

Complexity and Problem Solving:

  • Detail and service oriented with the ability to work under pressure and tight timelines.

  • Strategic Leadership: Shapes operational strategies and integrates activities across Takeda, influencing global business strategies.

Internal and External Contacts:

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain highly effective relationships with clients, sites, key opinion leaders, and external vendors.

  • Advanced Medical Consultation: Provides high-level medical advice to support drug development and marketing strategies.

  • Effective Stakeholder Engagement: Builds and maintains strong relationships with key external stakeholders to align clinical research with broader health needs.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Travel requirement is up to 30%

  • Hybrid work arrangement with a minimum requirement of at least 8 days a month in office.

U.S. Base Salary Range:

$307,300.00 - $482,900.00


The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location. 

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive, per calendar year, up to 80 hours of sick time, and new hires are eligible to accrue up to 120 hours of paid vacation.
